Chatgpt-Maker OpenAi has abandoned plans to become a profit company and reaffirmed the commitment to its non-profit state.
In a blog post on May 5, OpenAI confirmed the plans to convert its profit unit for profit in a so -called Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), which would remain under the control of the non -profit organization. PBCs are for profit companies that are legally obliged to prioritize a social mission together with the interests of shareholders.
The plans mark a reversal for OpenAI, which had previously floated a forklift conversion that involved rotating the non -profit entity.
“OpenAI was founded as a non -profit organization, and today is supervised and controlled by that non -profit organization. In the future, it will continue supervised and controlled by that non -profit organization,” said the Chatgpt manufacturer.
This can be done without compromising Operai’s ability to raise funds for the development of AI, which “currently requires hundreds of billions of dollars and eventually may require billions of dollars,” said the OpenI CEO, Sam Altman, in a letter to employees who announce the decision.
In 2024, Openai had a very different opinion, stating that the entity for profit was “necessary” to raise capital to accumulate the “large amounts of computation” necessary to execute AI models.

Controversial plans
Operai was originally founded as a non -profit organization in 2015, and in 2019 he created a supposedly profit entity to help AI developers raise funds. The for -profit unit has been maintained under the control of the non -profit organization since then.
In 2024, the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, one of Openai’s co -founders, sued Altman for allegedly “violating the terms of Musk’s fundamental contributions to the beneficial organization,” according to a presentation of the November Court.
In the lawsuit, Musk allegates that Altman “regularly manipulated Musk to co -confound her spurious company without profit, OpenAi”, while secretly plans to convert Openai to an entity for profit.

Operai’s leadership expects its income to reach $ 29.4 billion by 2026, Bloomberg reported in March. Forecast that gains revenues of $ 12.7 billion in 2025.
