Sitting among a large list of other Ethereum blockchain co-founders, Buterin was the one who wrote its white paper.

Ethereum has since become a dominant force in the crypto space, with two other co-founders also ranking high on the top 100 2023 Cointelegraph — Polkadot co-founder Gavin Wood at No. 5 and CEO of ConsenSys Josef Lubin in number 15.
The Ethereum blockchain itself grabbed headlines in September 2022 due to the anticipation of a completion of the merger — an event that completed its transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake consensus. The move to PoS, made with the help of Buterin and others, means that the blockchain should now require significantly less energy than previous PoW mining.
Cointelegraph has produced its Top 100 list every year since 2020, and Buterin has held a position on the list every year. He sat at No. 5 in 2020fell into No. 12 in 2021and then he came in No. 21 in 2022. He’s back this year, ranking 2nd higher than ever.
