Elon Musk launches AI chatbot ‘Grok’ and says it can outperform ChatGPT

by SuperiorInvest

Elon Musk and his artificial intelligence startup xAI have launched “Grok,” an AI chatbot that can reportedly outperform OpenAI’s first version of ChatGPT in several academic tests.

The motivation behind building Gruk is to create artificial intelligence tools equipped to help humanity by boosting research and innovation, Musk and xAI explained in a November 5 X (formerly Twitter) post.

Musk and the xAI team said a “unique and fundamental advantage” that Grok possesses is that it has real-time knowledge of the world through the X platform.

“It will also answer interesting questions that are rejected by most other AI systems,” Muska and xAI said. “Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so don’t use him if you hate humor!”

The engine that powers Grok (Grok-1) was evaluated in several academic tests in mathematics and coding, performing better than ChatGPT-3.5 in all tests, according to data shared by xAI.

However, it did not outperform the most advanced version of OpenAI, GPT-4, in any of the tests.

“It is second only to models that were trained with significantly more training data and computing resources like GPT-4, Musk and xAI said. “This shows the rapid progress we at xAI are making in LLM training with exceptional efficiency.”

The AI startup noted that Grok will be accessible on X Premium Plus for $16 per month. But for now, it is only offered to a limited number of users in the United States.

Grok remains a “very early beta product” that should improve rapidly week-to-week, xAI noted.

The xAI team said they will also implement more security measures over time to ensure that Grok is not used maliciously.

“We believe that AI has immense potential to bring significant scientific and economic value to society, so we will work to develop reliable safeguards against catastrophic forms of malicious use.”

“We believe in doing everything we can to ensure that AI remains a force for good,” xAI added.

The AI startup’s launch of Grok comes eight months after Musk founded the company in March.
