Americans consumed more than 1.3 billion cups of Nescafé last year, helping the brand become a Swiss-based food giant. Nestle largest coffee segment. Abroad the story is similar. With sales in more than 180 countries, one in every seven cups of coffee consumed worldwide is Nescafé.

But the company's farmers face a number of challenges, including high labor costs and rising temperatures that could reduce the area suitable for growing coffee by up to 50%, according to the Inter-American Development Bank.

Nescafé works with more than 100,000 farmers, buys more than 13 million bags of green coffee a year and has two dozen factories around the world.

So how is instant Nescafé produced? To find out, CNBC traveled to Vietnam, the world's second-largest coffee exporter behind Brazil, to see Nescafé's operations.
