Goal is spending billions of dollars on Nvidia popular computer chips, which are at the center of artificial intelligence research and projects.

In an Instagram Reels post on Thursday, Zuckerberg said the company’s “future roadmap” for AI requires it to build a “massive computing infrastructure.” By the end of 2024, Zuckerberg said the infrastructure will include 350,000 Nvidia H100 graphics cards.

Zuckerberg did not say how many graphics processing units (GPUs) the company has already purchased, but the H100 did not hit the market until late 2022, and its supply was limited. Analysts at Raymond James estimate that Nvidia is selling the H100 for between $25,000 and $30,000, and going up eBay They can cost more than $40,000. If Meta were paying at the lower end of the price range, that would equate to about $9 billion in expenses.

Additionally, Zuckerberg said that Meta’s computing infrastructure will contain “nearly 600,000 H100 compute equivalents if other GPUs are included.” In December, technology companies such as Meta, OpenAI and microsoft They said they would use AMD’s new Instinct MI300X AI computer chips.

Meta needs these heavy-duty computer chips as it conducts research in artificial general intelligence (AGI), which Zuckerberg said is a “long-term vision” for the company. OpenAI and Google’s DeepMind unit are also researching AGI, a futuristic form of AI comparable to human-level intelligence.

Meta chief scientist Yann LeCun highlighted the importance of GPUs during a media event in San Francisco last month.

″[If] “If you think AGI is in, the more GPUs you’ll have to buy,” LeCun said at the time. Regarding Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, LeCun said: “There is an AI war and he is supplying the weapons.”

In Meta’s third-quarter earnings report, the company said total expenses for 2024 will be in the range of $94 billion to $99 billion, driven in part by computing expansion.

“In terms of investment priorities, AI will be our largest area of investment in 2024, both in engineering and computing resources,” Zuckerberg said on the call with analysts.

Zuckerberg said Thursday that Meta plans to “responsibly open-source” its yet-to-be-developed “general intelligence,” an approach the company is also taking with its Llama family of large language models.

Meta is currently training Llama 3 and is also having its Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team and its GenAI research team work more closely, Zuckerberg said.

Shortly after Zuckerberg’s post, LeCun said in a mail in X, that “To accelerate progress, FAIR is now a sister organization of GenAI, the AI products division.”
