The purpose of this paper is to examine, with the aid of specific examples, some of the risks faced by an entrepreneur in his attempt to set up a new venture or to bring innovation to an industry. The risks are grouped into two categories – the pure or insurable risks and the speculative or uninsurable risks. Two subdivisions of speculative risks are considered, i.e. the risks taken by the entrepreneur in introducing something new and the external risks of his socio-political environment over which he has little control. At the end, it is recommended that allowance should be made for the pure risks by means of insurance and the spreading of risks into several locations and subsidiaries. The speculative risks cannot be fully anticipated. All the same, they should be seen as challenges, which could lead to windfall returns on investments.
