The trio visited Dresden, N.Y., home of the Greenidge Generation bitcoin mining operation, which has become a lightning rod in the broader debate over bitcoin’s environmental impact and, in particular, the political battles over New York state’s move last year to ban new mining projects. They found that both sides made wildly exaggerated claims about the harms or benefits of Greenidge’s operation. Democrat Anna Kelles of New York has repeatedly falsely claimed the facility will heat nearby Seneca Lake and kill aquatic life. At the same time, many proponents of mining dramatically overstate the community benefits, such as the number of jobs created.
