UK Manchester Airport said Thursday that it is temporarily closed both runways after a period of “heavy snow”.

“Health and safety will always be our top priority and operations will resume at the earliest opportunity,” it said.

Britain has been gripped by cold this week, with the Met Office issuing several snow and ice warnings across the country, including Manchester.

The notices, which expire at 12pm on Thursday, signal potential disruption to road and rail transport.

The bureau is forecasting a maximum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius (39.2 Fahrenheit) on Thursday.
