January report from WalletHub compared the 50 US states in five key aspects to find best states to start a family:
- Family fun
- health and safety
- Education and childcare
- Availability
- Socioeconomics
WalletHub evaluated these factors using 51 relevant metrics, each rated on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the most favorable conditions for family life.
The study found that the ideal city to raise a family is affordable to live in during times of high inflation, but also offers quality schools, healthcare and entertainment.
#1 Best State to Raise a Family: Massachusetts
Massachusetts ranked first in the list of the best state to raise a family. New England State received an overall score of 66.14. It ranked second in education and childcare and affordability.
The state is home to some of them the best schools in the country, including Harvard and MIT. According to him, the public school system is also one of the best in the world Niche.
In addition to these schools, others that rank among the top 50 at the undergraduate level in US News & World Report they include Boston College, Boston University, and Tufts University.

Minnesota ranked second on the list with a score of 62.07. The Midwestern state is known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” because it has more than 14,000 bodies of fresh water measuring at least ten acres.
Minnesota is also home to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, which ranks No. 62 on the list of the nation’s best universities, according to US News & World Report.
New York ranked third on the list, scoring 61.11. The state boasts the second most fun family activity, according to WalletHub.
Although New York is one of the three states with the least affordable housing (after Hawaii and California), it is still cheaper to live there than it was in the summer of 2022.
