The California financial regulator warns of 7 new types of cryptography, AI scams

A California financial regulator says that users reported seven new types of cryptography and AI scams that I had not seen before through thousands of complaints in 2024.

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation of California (DFPI) said in a March 10 statement that he received 2,668 complaints in 2024 and found seven types of scams that were not yet registered, such as Bitcoin’s false mining schemes (BTC), where fraudulators offer false investments in mining.

The DFPI also received complaints about the false schemes of cryptography games, where users are encouraged to deposit funds only to exhaust their wallets, and scammers who offer false work that require victims to transfer cryptography and provide private information.

The victims also reported the theft of private keys through fake airdrops, scams of false investment groups in WhatsApp or Telegram, AI investment scams that offer unusually high yields and lose their cryptography after interacting with certain simulated websites.

The AI ​​industry experienced significant growth in 2024, reaching a market capitalization of $ 638 billion, according to precedence investigation.

There was also a remarkable increase in crimeware as a service (CAAS), where the hackers and experienced cybercounts sell their tools and services to less experienced criminals for a price.

The DFPI commissioner, KC Mohseni, said that the regulator urges the precaution to interact with unknown platforms and “verify the domains of the website to avoid fraudulent imitations and keep distrustful of the sites of cryptographic recovery scammers.”

Through its association with the State, DFPI says it closed more than 26 fraudulent crypto websites and discovered $ 4.6 million in user losses last year.

The Department of Justice of California (DOJ) eliminated 42 websites of cryptographic scammers in 2024 that stole $ 6.5 million of the victims, with an average loss per person of $ 146,306.
