“That has never happened before,” said Chris Hewitt, director of the OMM Climate Services Division. It marks the first time since the maintenance of records began that all the hottest years have fallen in the most recent decade.
2024 was the warmer registered year, even exceeding the wide advantage of 2023 in other last years. The planet’s surface was approximately 1.55 degrees warm than its average during a reference period that approaches the pre -industrial era, from 1850 to 1900.

The extra energy in the atmosphere and the oceans helped feed the disasters related to climate worldwide. Extreme climatic events such as drought, storms and forest fires displaced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes, according to the report.
Atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases released from fossil fuel combustion continue to increase. In 2024, the concentration of carbon dioxide is invisible in at least two million years, according to the report.
The concentrations of two important greenhouse gases, methane and nitrous oxide, reached invisible levels in at least 800,000 years. Homo sapiens, or modern humans, emerged about 300,000 years ago, so our species had never experienced an atmosphere so loaded with greenhouse gases heating planets.
When the countries signed the Paris Agreement in 2015, they agreed to try to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels.
“While a single year above 1.5 degrees C of the heating does not indicate that the long -term temperature objectives of the Paris Agreement are out of reach, it is a call for attention that we are increasing the risks for our lives, economies and the planet,” said Celeste Saulo, the OMM secretary general, in a statement.
The new report estimates that long -term warming has reached 1.25 to 1.41 degrees Celsius above pre -industrial levels, although error margins for some estimates extend more than 1.5 degrees. The authors of the report estimate that last year, the child and other factors contributed with 0.1 or 0.2 additional of a temporary heating degree.
The child is a natural climate pattern that tends to slightly raise the general temperature of the planet’s surface. However, record warmth continued in 2025, even through the transition from El Chico to the opposite pattern, the girl.
“It has been really quite extraordinary to see that warmth continues for so long,” said John Kennedy, scientific coordinator and main author of the report, during a call with journalists.

The heat content of the oceans, a way of measuring this warmth over different depths, also reached maximum record last year. In the last two decades, from 2005 to 2024, the oceans warmed more than double fast than from 1960 to 2005, according to the report.
The increase in ocean temperatures has had devastating consequences for marine life. In April 2024, hot water corals had been bleached in each ocean basin where they grow.
The global average sea level increase also reached a record in 2024, according to the report. The speed at which the seas are also increasing has also duplicated in recent years: 4.7 millimeters per year in the last decade, from 2015 to 2024, compared to 2.1 millimeters per year between 1993 and 2002.
The work of the World Meteorological Organization depends on international cooperation among its 101 member countries, including the United States.
“If you observe how the weather has progressed since the beginning of the OMM in 1950, you can now see that you can have the prognosis on your smartphone,” said Omar Baddour, head of OMM climate monitoring. “You can’t believe how much collaboration is behind this.”
NASA data and the Oceanic and Atmospheric National Administration, which recently lost hundreds of personnel positions as part of the rapid cuts on a large scale to the federal bureaucracy that the Trump administration made earlier this year, are included in the new OMM report.
