Dubai, unites the Arab Emirates: the administration of President Donald Trump, according to the reports, plans to announce that the United States will officially call the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia, a measure that would be welcome by the leaders of the Arab Gulf and will probably get angry with Iran.
Associated Press reported the development, citing two unidentified American officials, and is scheduled for Trump’s visit in the Middle East from May 13 to 16, time during which he will make stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
The name of the body of water, a large shipping lane between the southern coast of Iran and the coasts of the Arab countries, Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Bahrein, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, has long been a point of discussion, and several Arab states have spent years by pressing a change from Persian to Persian to Gulf. The area has been called the Persian Gulf since approximately the 18th century, although it is known as the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Arabia in many Arab countries.
The United States Central Command in its publications and statements uses the name of the Gulf of Arabia, while the State Department and the CIA have used the Persian Gulf.
Google Maps label the “Persian Gulf (Arabic Gulf)” region, while Apple Maps and the main media of the USA. UU., Including NBC News and Associated Press, they call it the Persian Gulf.
Iran, home of the former Persian empire, threatened in 2012 to sue Google for not naming the body of water completely on its maps.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comments from CNBC. The Trump administration has participated in indirect conversations with Iranian officials about Iran’s nuclear program.
