Singer Tina Turner has died at the age of 83 after a long illness, according to a statement posted on her official Facebook page on Wednesday.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow,” the statement read.

“Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who left us all her greatest work: her music. All our sincere sympathy goes out to her family. Tina, you will be greatly missed,” it continued.

Widely referred to as the Queen of Rock and Roll, Turner had a career that spanned over 60 years and included the iconic songs “Proud Mary” and “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” Known for her energetic performances, bold sequins and tousled hair, Turner has won 12 Grammy Awards and sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

In recent years, Turner suffered from poor health. She was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016 and underwent a kidney transplant in 2017.

In a separate statement to Sky News, a spokesman said Turner died “peacefully” at her home in Kusnacht, near Zurich, Switzerland.

“With her, the world is losing a musical legend and role model,” the spokeswoman said.

Turner was born in Brownsville, Tennessee to Anna Mae Bullock. For the past ten years, she has lived mostly out of the public eye in Switzerland.

In 2021, Tuner sold its music rights to the German music company BMG. The deal included her past recordings over 10 studio albums, as well as the rights to her name, image and likeness. She remained signed to the record label Warner Music.

That same year, Turner was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the second time. She was inducted in 1991 with ex-husband Ike Turner, who died in 2007.

At the launch, actress Angela Basset, who portrayed Turner in the 1993 biopic, gave a speech praising the singer, and artists including Keith Urban, HER and Christina Aguilera performed renditions of her songs.
