The high -risk summit on Friday among the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin de Russia did not result in an advance, even when Trump described him as “productive”, while Putin proposed another meeting in Moscow.
The White House had made the conversations, initially seen as an attempt to ensure a high fire between Russia and Ukraine, with spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt calling the summit, “an listening exercise for the president.”
After Friday’s meeting, Trump said: “There is no treatment until there is an agreement.”
Ukraine was not part of the discussions, fanning the concerns that a possible agreement could have compromised the sovereignty of the country. “Ukraine is ready to work in the most productive way possible to end the war, and we have a solid position of the United States … a meeting of leaders is needed, at least, Ukraine, the United States and the Russian side,” said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an X post before the summit.
This was Putin’s first visit to the United States in approximately a decade, with the Russian president emphasizing that it was a “difficult moment” for bilateral relations. The meeting was held in Alaska, which was once Russian territory.
“There were many, many points where we agreed … I would say that a couple of greats that we have not reached there, but we have advanced,” Trump said at a joint press conference with Putin. The leaders did not take any questions from the press.

Putin described the talks as a “starting point”, both for the resolution of the conflict with kyiv and to improve relations with Washington, which according to him had “fallen to the lowest point since the cold war.”
Trump said Putin’s observations were “deep” and added that he would talk to NATO and ZELENSKYY to update them about Russia’s discussions. “Ultimately, it depends on them,” he said.
“Many points were agreed. Only a few remain. Some are not so significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have very good chances of getting there,” Trump said, without elaborating.
Since the invasion of Russia of Ukraine in 2022, there have been multiple rounds of peace negotiations, but there has not been a great advance in the end of hostilities.
In an interview with Fox News after Friday’s summit, Trump asked Zelenskyy to make an agreement to end the war in Ukraine. “I have to make a deal. Yes. Look, Russia is a very big power, and they are not. They are great soldiers,” he said.
The Russian media were optimistic on Friday before the Putin meeting with Trump, and the summit was seen as a victory for Moscow. Comments on Russian state news sites characterized conversations as positive for Russia. The mood in Ukraine was gloomy in the midst of the country’s apprehensions losing a certain territory as part of a negotiated agreement by Trump.
