The main technology companies and foreign governments are rushed to respond after President Donald Trump announced plans on Friday to impose a $ 100,000 rate in H-1B visas, threatening to re-re-pay the program that supports the United States Technological Labor Force.
The rate would apply to the new H-1B applicants, not to the renovations or the current visa holders, according to a White House official. First it will be applied in the next lottery cycle, and does not apply to the winners of the 2025 lottery, said the person. The White House also clarified that the new $ 100,000 rate is not an annual position, as previously reported by several media.
The measure could give companies a massive, mainly in the technology and finance sectors, which depend largely on highly qualified immigrants, particularly India and China.
The announcement sent shock waves through some of the country’s largest technology and finance companies:
- Amazon The immigration team advised its H-1B and H-4 visas holders to remain in the USA. And that foreigners return before 12:01 am et on September 21, according to internal messages seen by CNBC.
- JPMorgan Chase The law firm sent a memorandum asking H-1B visas holders in the firm that remain in the United States and avoid international trips to more than one orientation, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The rate represents the most aggressive movement of the administration so far to restrict legal immigration. Since he assumed the position in January, Trump has advanced a wide repression of the illegal and legal entry in the US, but Friday’s announcement marks the most significant attempt to review employment visas.
Amazon used the H-1B headlines, more than 14,000 at the end of June. Microsoft, Meta, Apple and Google had more than 4,000 visas each, among the 10 main recipients for fiscal year 2025.

“President Trump promised to put American workers first, and this common sense action does exactly that by discouraging spam companies to the system and reducing wages,” Taylor Rogers, a White House spokesman, told CNBC. “It also certainly gives US companies who really want to take highly qualified workers to our great country, but have been trampled by system abuse.”
‘Humanitarian consequences’
The announcement also interrupted the status quo abroad, where foreign governments rushed to evaluate the impact of new rules in their countries.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India said that it is studying visa restrictions and its implications, emphasizing that Indian and American industries share an interest in maintaining competitiveness in innovation. He also highlighted the probable interruption of individual families.
“It is likely that this measure has humanitarian consequences through the interruption caused by families. The government expects these interruptions to be adequately addressed by US authorities,” said the Ministry of External Affairs of India in a statement.
