According to official figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Friday, UK retail sales fell by 3.2% month-on-month vs. -0.5% expected and 1.4% posted in November.

Core Retail salesdecrease in sales of motor fuels, down 3.3% month-on-month vs. the expected -0.6% and the 1.5% recorded in November.

Annual UK retail sales fell 2.4% in December against expectations of 1.1% and a 0.2% rise in November, while core retail sales fell 2.1% in the reporting month against expectations of 1.3% and 0.5% in the previous month.

Highlights (via ONS)

Retailers say part of the decline reflects consumers shopping for groceries and Christmas gifts in December.

Retail sales are likely to subtract 0.04 pct points from GDP in the 4th quarter.
