AND Walmart employee killed six people before taking his own life Tuesday night at a Walmart Supercenter in Chesapeake, Va., police said Wednesday.

The gunman was a disgruntled employee, a senior police official said NBC news.

The massacre occurred as people were doing last-minute shopping for Thanksgiving items. The shooting also happened days before Black Friday, when shoppers traditionally head to retailers like Walmart to pick up Christmas gifts at bargain prices.

CNBC has reached out to Walmart for comment on the shooting and the investigation, as well as any security concerns ahead of Black Friday.

Walmart said on Twitter early Wednesday that it was “shocked” by the shooting. “We are praying for those affected, the community and our co-workers,” the company said. “We work closely with law enforcement and are focused on supporting our associates.”

In June, Walmart said it added a class to its training program for store managers that focuses on spotting employees and customers who may need intervention for mental health issues. Officials said Wednesday they had not yet determined a “clear motive” for Tuesday’s rampage.

The shooting was reported to police shortly after 10:00 PM ET and officers arrived on the scene within minutes. Police declared the store safe by 11:20 p.m., officials said Wednesday.

A local hospital treated other victims. The gunman used a handgun and apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said Wednesday. They did not immediately release his identity because they had yet to notify his next of kin.

Chesapeake Police and Virginia State Police executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home, and authorities believe there is no further risk to the public, officials said Wednesday.

The Chesapeake store will remain closed as authorities investigate the shooting. That process could take days, officials said.

The massacre at Walmart came days after a deadly mass shooting over the weekend in LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado SpringsColorado, in which five people were killed.

This is a developing story. Watch for updates.
